The Aquatics Program is geared towards helping scouts learn as much as possible about water sports and water safety, and to complete requirements towards earning the Fishing, Canoeing, Sailing, and Motor Boating and Waterskiing Merit badges, and takes place in three parts:
  • Merit badge programs at Troop meetings
  • Swamp day at Delaware State Park (learn to recover from a swamped boat)
  • Water Sports campout at Jeffrey Scioto Park with Family Cookout

Troop Meetings

When: July 22 and 29, August 5 and 12 (if necessary)

Deadline: sign up for ONE of the following Merit Badge programs by Tuesday, July 8:

  • Fishing Merit badge: all scouts can participate
  • Canoeing Merit badge: all scouts who can swim can participate
  • Sailing Merit badge: second year and up scouts who can swim
  • Motor Boating and Waterskiing Merit badge: third year and up scouts who can swim

(Note: First-timers in each program will be given priority over scouts repeating a program).

Note: Safety Afloat will be provided July 29 and CPR will be provided July 22. Both help the scout to fulfill requirements for some of the merit badges.

Swamp Day

When: Saturday August 2 – drop off scouts at 8:30am

Where: Delaware State Park, South end of main beach swim area (map here)

Pickup times:

  • Canoeing scouts: 3:00pm
  • Sailing scouts: 3:00pm

Meals:

  • Eat breakfast before arriving
  • Bring a sack lunch and your canteen or cup

Scouts should bring:

  • Lunch
  • Scout handbook
  • Sunscreen, hat, rain gear
  • Swim trunks and towel
  • Lawn or camp chair for fishing, eating, etc.
  • “Water shoes” – something other than flip-flops to protect feet while boating
  • Head strap for glasses
  • Kneeling pad if you’re going to go canoeing
  • Dry change of clothes and dry shoes

Other:

  • A current Class I medical form is required for each scout and each parent participating in water activities
  • Swamp day activities will go on RAIN or SHINE – be prepared!

Troop 200 Water Sports Campout

When: August 08-10, 2008 – drop off Scouts at Jeffrey Scioto Park between 6 and 7 pm

Where: Jeffrey Scioto Park on O’Shaughnessy Reservoir (map here)

Cost: $?? per Scout and adult

Pickup time: Parents can pick up Scouts Sunday at 3 pm at Jeffrey Scioto Park

Meals:

  • Eat Friday evening supper before you arrive
  • Saturday breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided by the Troop
  • Saturday evening Family picnic dinner at 6:30 (please arrive by 6 pm)
  • Hotdogs and hamburgers provided by the Troop
  • Napkins and basic condiments provided by the Troop
  • Each family will bring a dish to share (attendance could be 100 or more)
  • Families must bring their own tableware, drinks, and something to sit on
  • Additional grilles and “grillers” are always welcome
  • Each Patrol will be assigned a dish to bring

Scouts should bring:

  • Class A uniform
  • Personal gear for mild weather camping
  • Personal eating utensils, plate, bowl, and cup
  • Scout handbook
  • Sunscreen, hat, rain gear
  • Swim trunks and towel
  • Lawn or camp chair for fishing, eating, etc.
  • “Water shoes” – something other than flip-flops to protect feet while boating
  • Head strap for glasses
  • Kneeling pad if you’re going to go canoeing

Patrols:

  • Each patrol should plan a skit for the Saturday night campfire program. Let the SPL know what you plan to perform by dinnertime Saturday
  • Each patrol should plan a reverent activity for the Sunday Worship service. The Chaplain Aide, Scoutmaster, or other adult leader can help patrols with ideas. Let the Chaplain Aide know what your activity is by Sunday breakfast.

Other:

  • All scouts will be using Troop tents; the troop may be able to provide some tents to family members who don’t have their own
  • A current Class I medical form is required for each scout and each parent participating in water activities or staying overnight

Important Notes For All Programs:

All participants in any on-water program must be able to swim and pass the basic BSA swim test. Non-swimmers can sign up for the Fishing Merit Badge program.

  • Parents must complete a special activity Permission Form (required for all on-water programs)
  • Parent helpers are always needed and encouraged – especially if you have skills in canoeing, fishing, sailing, motorboating, waterskiing, lifeguarding, or swimming.
  • As space permits, parents are encouraged to join scouts in learning any of these skills during the Summer Aquatics Program.
  • All scouts will be required to wear a personal flotation device (provided by the Troop if you don’t have your own) at all times while on the water
