Cold Weather Gear Checklist

This checklist is for all Scouts who are going on a campout where we will be camping in tents or unheated structures and temperatures could be 40° or below at night (even below freezing). Having the items on this list WILL allow you to stay warm.

All experienced Scouts have these things and need to remember to bring them. If you are a new Scout and need a couple of items please contact Scoutmaster Riley at 889-0638 or the adult trip leader (see campout flyer) BEFORE the campout date.  They may have some items you can borrow.

Essential Clothes - For Sleeping:

  • Sleeping bag
  • Extra blankets. How many depends on cold your sleeping bag is rated for
    • 2 blankets if you have a summer, 30° bag,
    • 1 blanket for a 10-20° bag
  • Foam pad, thermorest or extra blanket to go under your sleeping bag.
  • Clean dry underwear (Change each night)
  • Clean dry socks (Change each night)
  • Clean dry sweat shirt & sweat pants. (Do not wear during daytime)
  • Clean dry ski type pullover hat. (Do not wear during daytime)
  • Sleeping clothes are kept separate than daytime clothes.  These are your dry sleeping clothes.

Essential Clothes - Daytime:

  • Layers of day time clothes that will fit under your jacket. See separate cold weather clothing handout for details.
  • A warm winter coat.
  • Gloves or mittens.
  • A warm hat to wear during the day.
  • Canteen or water bottle filled with water.

Tent camping gear:

  • A 2 or 3 person tent - most likely a 2-man Troop tent
  • An extra large tent will make you colder.
  • A plastic ground cloth for UNDER your tent. Troop tents have these.
  • 5' x 7 ' piece of plastic to put INSIDE your tent.  No aluminum space blankets in winter - they conducts cold.
  • A Scout buddy or a parent. No Scout will cold weather tent camp alone.

Normal gear to remember:

  • Your Class "A" Uniform.  Show up wearing it at start of campout.  (Note: The Order of the Arrow sash is NOT a normal part of Class A.  Sash should only be worn at OA functions and at formal Troop functions (like Courts of Honor).
  • Cup, bowl and plate.
  • Fork, knife and spoon.
  • Flashlight. Small light weight flashlight with fresh batteries.
  • Compass. (Especially boys teaching/learning compass skills)
  • Warm shoes Show up wearing them Friday night.
  • Pocket knife (if you have earned your toten chit).
  • Rain gear - A MUST HAVE (A yard trash bag will do in a pinch.)
